First Dog, by Davenport T. Pug

Portuguese Water Dog or Labradoodle?

This is Davenport T. Pug, weighing in on my choice for first pooch of the White House, to be inaugurated on 1/20/09. All the fuss has been about Obama, but a president can't govern effectively without a furry first advisor. Our role in history has been crucial and yet largely neglected, but Obama, promoting equality for both humans and canines, is sure to tackle species discrimination, otherwise known as speciesism, after he is sworn into office. See the following links for more info on past first dogs of the White House: http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1830236,00.html

Without a doubt, my furry vote for the First Family is the Portuguese Water Dog: it is a working class dog that can relate to the common man. Historically, the breed aided Portuguese fisherman by herding and catching fish, carrying messages between boats, retrieving lost items overboard, and guarding the catch and boats when in port. Portuguese water dogs were considered part of crew, and were compensated with a share of the catch and the profits.

Of course, a pug would be a better choice for first dog, but since the Portuguese Water Dog is both hypoallergenic and loves water (two un-pug like traits) it is ideal for the Obama family because one daughter has allergies and the family vacations by the water in Obama's native Hawaii. Being both beautiful and brainy are added pooch perks.

Since I don't want to be accused of acting as a lobbyist by promoting only my own agenda (Obama will have enough of that during his presidency) I will forgive the pug omission and support the Portuguese Water Dog.

Woof-Woof,
Davenport T. Pug
